PHILIP Often confused with: PHILIP THE EVANGELIST Feast Day: MAY 3 L ike the apostle Andrew, Philip served as a link to the Greek community among Hebrews. He is only mentioned in the Gospel of John and may have been a dis- ciple of John the Baptist. When Philip asks Jesus where he was staying, Jesus replies, "come and see" (John: 38-39). Philip repeats this phrase when he brings Bar- tholomew, also called Nathaniel, to Jesus and it becomes a call for all Christians, to "come and see" the Lord. Philip was preaching in Greece when he was crucified upside down. ANDREW Also known as: OLDER BROTHER TO PETER Feast Day: NOVEMBER 30 T his fisherman brother of St. Peter, and younger son of Jonah, has a name that is Greek in heritage not Hebrew. And unlike his brother (Simon) Peter whose name is Aramaic, indicative of the Jewish-Gentile environment in Galilee. Andrew played a prominent role in the story of the multiplication of loaves when he sees the boy with five barley loaves and two fish (John 6: 8-9). Andrew and his fellow apostle with a Greek name, Philip, serve as interpreters for Greeks who have entered the city just prior to the Passion as recounted in John's Gospel.
