PETER Also known as: SIMON PETER OF CEPHAS Feast Day: JUNE 29 T he apostle Peter may be one of the most widely known of the apostles in the Catholic Church because much is written about him and he is considered the first pope. The Bible describes in detail when Jesus met the fishermen (Simon) Peter and his brother Andrew. This scene also gives us one of the most often quoted met- aphors as Jesus tells the brothers from now on, they will catch people (Luke 5). Peter was among Christ's first apostles, but his impet- uous nature represents the human failings in us all. He lacks faith in Jesus on the stormy waters on the Sea of Galilee. He draws his sword on the soldier who came for Jesus and Jesus rebukes him. He also denies knowing Christ three times during the Savior's final hours. Following the Resurrection, Pentecost and the Ascension, Peter serves as the leader of the remaining apostles as written in Acts. His stories of human failure and redemption continue to give hope to all who learn about them. JAMES Also known as: JAMES THE GREAT, JAMES THE GREATER, AND SON OF ZEBEDEE Feast Day: JULY 25 J ames is the older brother of the apostle John, both sons of Zebedee and Salome. Both fisher- men brothers were among Jesus' first disciples from the shores off the Sea of Galilee. It is suggested the two brothers may have had fiery tempers that earned them the nicknames Boanerges or "Sons of Thunder" (Mark 3:17). The designate, the great or the greater, was added to distinguish him from the other apostle James who was believed to be younger or shorter than the son of Zebedee. James spread the Gospel across Israel, the Roman empire and Spain. A Spanish pilgrimage route in his name began in the 9th century based on miraculous visions and the discovery of relics. He was martyred for this faith by King Herod in Jerusalem in the year of 44 a.d. ⊲ SPECIAL EDITION | ARCHBISHOP'S CATHOLIC APPEAL 7
